CPP disability benefits (CPPD): eligibility and applying

Compiled by Mahmoud Halat, checked

Short answer

The CPP disability benefit is a monthly payment for people aged 18 to 65 who have paid into the Canada Pension Plan and cannot work at any job regularly because of a long-term disability. Apply online or by mail, then send a medical report from your health care provider. Service Canada aims to decide within 120 days. The 2026 maximum is $1,741.20 a month.

Who can apply

  • You must be 18 to 65 and have a physical or mental disability that stops you from working at any job regularly and is long-term, not expected to improve, or likely to cause death.

  • You need CPP contributions in 4 of the 6 years before your disability stopped you working, or in 3 of those 6 years if you have contributed for 25 years in total. Credits from another country, child rearing or a divorce can help.

What you need

  • Fill in sections 1 and 2 of the Medical report (ISP-2519), then have your health care professional complete it. If an insurer or provincial program already pays you disability benefits, it can mail your latest medical reports instead.

Questions people ask

How long does a CPP disability application take?

Regular processing takes up to 120 days. Priority processing for eligible people is 5 days for a terminal illness and 30 days for a grave condition. Missing documents slow it down.

What counts as a severe and prolonged disability for CPP?

It must stop you from working at any job on a regular basis, and be long-term and not expected to get better, or be likely to cause death.

Can I get CPP disability if I already get disability income from an insurer?

You may. Getting disability income from a private insurer or a provincial or territorial program does not by itself stop you from being eligible for the CPP disability benefit.

Can I still apply if I became disabled years ago?

Yes, you may qualify if you had enough CPP contributions when your disability began. Service Canada checks your past contributions under the late applicant provision.

Does CPP disability pay for medication?

No. The benefit is a monthly payment only. It does not cover medications, medical devices or other health costs, so check what your province or territory offers.
