Passport renewal and applications in Canada

Compiled by Mahmoud Halat, checked

Short answer

Canadian passports are issued by the federal government. If your last adult passport was issued in the past 15 years, you can usually renew it, and some people can renew online. First-time adults and all children apply with a new application, by mail or in person at a Service Canada Centre or passport office. A 10-year adult passport costs $163.50 in Canada.

Who can apply

  • You can renew instead of applying for a new passport only if your last passport was an adult passport issued when you were 16 or older, within the past 15 years, and your name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier stay the same.

  • Online renewal is only for people renewing their own regular passport, with a home and mailing address in Canada, whose passport expires within 6 months or has already expired, and who are not travelling in the next 20 business days. Your current passport is cancelled when you apply.

  • A child passport (age 0 to 15) is valid for up to 5 years and cannot be renewed. You apply for a new one each time, and at 16 the child applies for an adult passport.
