# Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and the T2201 form

Federal service · Benefits and money

Compiled by Mahmoud Halat, checked 13 October 2026. Not a government website. The official page always has the final word.

## Short answer

The disability tax credit (DTC) lowers income tax for people with a severe and prolonged impairment, or for the family member who supports them. You apply first: you fill out Part A and a medical practitioner fills out Part B, online or on paper Form T2201. Once approved, you claim the disability amount on your tax return. Approval also opens other programs, such as the RDSP.

Who handles it: [Canada Revenue Agency](https://canadaservicemap.ca/bodies/canada-revenue-agency). Handles it everywhere in Canada.

## Who can apply

- You may qualify if a medical practitioner certifies a severe and prolonged impairment in one category (such as walking, vision or mental functions), significant limits in two or more categories, or therapy to support a vital function. - A marked restriction means you cannot do the activity, or it takes three times longer than usual, nearly all the time (about 90%), and it has lasted or will last at least 12 months in a row. ## Steps

1. The person with the impairment fills out Part A online in their CRA account, by phone, or on paper Form T2201. A medical practitioner must fill out Part B. Both parts must be sent the same way. 2. With the digital form, you get a reference number after sending Part A. Give it to your medical practitioner so they can submit Part B online. The number works for up to 12 months. ## Costs and amounts

- If your medical practitioner charges a fee to fill out the application, you have to pay it. You may be able to claim that fee as a medical expense on your tax return. ## How much you get

- For the 2025 tax year: the disability amount is $10,138. For someone under 18, a supplement of $5,914 is added, for a total of $16,052. ## How long it takes

- The CRA aims to send its decision (a notice of determination) within 8 weeks of getting your application, 95% of the time. It takes longer if it has to ask your practitioner for more information. ## Good to know

- The DTC is non-refundable: it only reduces tax owed. If the person with the impairment does not need all of it, the unused part can be transferred to a supporting family member. - Being approved for the DTC can help you get the registered disability savings plan, the Canada workers benefit disability supplement, the child disability benefit and the Canada Disability Benefit. ## Questions people ask

### How much is the disability tax credit for 2025?

For the 2025 tax year the disability amount you claim is $10,138. People under 18 at the end of the year can also claim the $5,914 supplement for children, for $16,052 in total. The credit lowers the tax you owe rather than paying you cash.

### Can I claim the disability tax credit for past years?

### How long does it take to get approved for the DTC?

The CRA's goal is to send a notice of determination within 8 weeks of receiving your Form T2201, and it aims to meet that 95% of the time. Requests for more medical information add time.

### Who can fill out the medical part of the DTC application?

Medical doctors and nurse practitioners can certify any impairment. Others can certify only their own field, for example optometrists for vision, audiologists for hearing, psychologists for mental functions and physiotherapists for walking.

### When should I apply for the DTC?

You can apply at any time of year. Applying before you file your tax return avoids a delay, because the CRA reviews a DTC application before it assesses a return sent with it.

No. The CRA no longer accepts DTC forms through Submit documents. Use the digital DTC application or mail the paper form.
