# Access to information (ATIP) request: how to file

Federal service · Voting and democracy

Compiled by Mahmoud Halat, checked 12 October 2026. Not a government website. The official page always has the final word.

## Short answer

Anyone can request records held by federal institutions under the Access to Information Act, or their own personal information under the Privacy Act. Provinces have their own laws for their records.

Who handles it: [Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (ATIP Online)](https://canadaservicemap.ca/bodies/treasury-board-of-canada-secretariat). Handles it everywhere in Canada.
